Smuggling of drug backfires

NEW PORT RICHEY _ The man told doctors at Riverside Hospital that he was suffering from severe stomach pains. When doctors operated, they found out why: He had swallowed six balloons filled with methadone. James Lisanti, 46, of 7312 Heath Drive was in the West Pasco Detention Center for driving with a suspended license. Lisanti told doctors he swallowed the balloons because he needed the medication to overcome his drug addiction, and jail officials wouldn't provide the narcotic for him. He smuggled the drug inside the jail in his body. Doctors were able to recover only four of the balloons during surgery Tuesday. Lisanti remained at Riverside Hospital on Saturday in stable condition. No charges had been filed.
