Five manatees stranded

Five manatees stranded 200 feet from water when the tide ebbed were kept cool and wet by a team of fishermen and park rangers until the sea returned at high tide. Bob Wasno, a member of the Florida Marine Mammal Stranding Network, said the mammals were trapped about 9 a.m. Sunday on a shoal near Wood Key in Everglades National Park. It isn't clear what caused this group to become stranded.

The rangers Sunday rubbed sunscreen on the animals and kept them covered with wet bed sheets, Wasno said.
