The Chamberlain Chiefs defeated the Jefferson Dragons 15-7, 7-15, 15-2 in volleyball action Tuesday night at Chamberlain. The loss marked the final regular-season game for the Dragons, who head into post-season play next week with a 2-11 record. The Chiefs (15-4), on the other hand, end their regular season Thursday night in a tri-match against Robinson and Brandon at Robinson.
With the Chiefs leading 12-7 in the first game, senior Kathy MacKenzie batted a point on a dink before Jennifer Roberts served an ace to end the game.
After winning the first game, Chamberlain coach Megan Bennett took out the starting lineup to allow everybody a chance to play.
"This is the first game we've done that in, actually," Bennett said. "I don't like to go three games but they're sophomores and they get nervous."
The Dragons jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game before Chamberlain was able to get on the board. Plagued by service errors, the Chiefs were never really in the game.
Leading 7-3, Jefferson rattled off a few easy points when Nicole Riley, Kathy Scott, Lourdes Fernandez and Trine Quest each served an ace to widen the margin to 13-5.
Chamberlain rallied for two more points before Jefferson's Heather Allen sent the match into three games when she ended the second game with an ace.
Bennett returned the starters for the third game and the Chiefs cruised to an easy victory.
Trailing 2-0 to start the game, Chamberlain came alive to win the next 15 points. Seniors Robin Pegram, Julie Heipp and Roberts combined for nine kills in the third game to lead the Chiefs' offensive attack.
