Paddlers are invited to help celebrate the grand opening of the new canoe trail at Weedon Island State Preserve in St. Petersburg this Saturday. Started five years ago, the four-mile trail was completed this year with the help of volunteers. A ribbon-cutting ceremony starts at 10 a.m. at the end of Weedon Drive, near the start of the trail. Then several guides, including a bird expert, a biologist and a park ranger, will lead tours through the trail. "The idea is just to get everybody out there and go canoeing," said preserve manager Keith Thompson. Paddlers must bring their own canoes. No canoes are available at the preserve.
