Stockbroker found, jailed

A Pensacola stockbroker who faked his death a year ago in New Orleans was in a Georgia jail Thursday, charged with stealing $1.1-million from clients, authorities said. Gareth Devon Harper was arrested Wednesday in Savannah, Ga., where he was living under the name David McDavid, said FBI Agent Harold Jones of Savannah.

He remained jailed Thursday without bail.

His fiancee, Janie Cyrus, reported him missing when he failed to return from a business trip to New Orleans last Oct. 16.

In his motel room, investigators found a photograph of Harper slouched in a chair with what looked like a knife stuck in his chest, said FBI Agent Terry Ware.

Harper's car was found in the parking lot of the motel and his clothes, wallet and other personal items were in his room. A substance that looked like blood but wasn't had been smeared about.

In April, a federal grand jury in Pensacola indicted the missing man on 32 counts of wire fraud.
