UF student named outstanding intern

Jeff Pursae, a University of Florida student from Clearwater, has been named the outstanding intern in the JCPenney Southeastern Region summer internship program. Pursae, a senior marketing major, was selected from 218 student interns in the Southeast.

Pursae was awarded a $500 scholarship as the Central Florida district winner. He then competed in Atlanta with 37 other district winners for the regional title.

As the Southeastern District winner, he received a $1,000 scholarship and a trip to J.C. Penney Co. Inc. headquarters for four days and for a meeting with William Howell, chairman of the board.

Howell presented Jeff with an additional $1,000 scholarship.

Pursae was selected to compete for the award based on job performance, evaluations from his managers, special projects and on a book detailing those projects.

Pursae is a 1986 graduate of Countryside High School. His parents are Paul and Anne Marie Pursae of Clearwater. He served his internship at the JCPenney store at Countryside Mall.

Tarpon Chamber to honor youths

The Greater Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce will honor 12 area young people as students of the month at a luncheon today at Pappas Restaurant in Tarpon Springs.

Students of the Month for September are Ryan Reber, Tarpon Springs Elementary; David Dey, Tarpon Springs Fundamental; Dimitri Tagaropoulos, Sunset Hills Elementary; Barbara Penman, Tarpon Springs Middle; Noah Estrin, East Lake High; Tina Distasio, Tarpon Springs High.

Students of the Month for October are Janeen Laxton, Tarpon Springs Elementary; Amber Miller, Tarpon Springs Fundamental; Billy Matthews, Sunset Hills Elementary; Ron Cooney, Tarpon Springs Middle; Kevin Olsen, East Lake High; Elizabeth Hourdas, Tarpon Springs High.

Guest speaker for the luncheon will be Rep. Mike Bilirakis, R-Palm Harbor. The cost of the luncheon is $8. For reservations, call the Chamber at 937-6109.

USF student earns degree

Loren Ann Valenti, daughter of Dr. Nicolas and Jeanette Valenti of Belleair, recently graduated cum laude from the University of South Florida with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.

At the University of South Florida, Ms. Valenti was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, the Pi Gamma Mu international honor society for social sciences and Phi Kappa Phi national psychology honor society.

Ms. Valenti is pursuing her graduate studies at the University of West Florida.

Woman named to honor society

Dawn A. Martin, a senior at Texas Christian University, was initiated Oct. 2 into the Beta Zeta chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron, the national honor society in home economics.

Selection for membership is based on academic accomplishment, potential for professional and community leadership and spirit of service.

Ms. Martin, daughter of Beverly and Buddy Gould of Clearwater and a 1981 graduate of Boca Ciega High School, is majoring in nutrition. She is a member of the Student Nutrition/Dietetic Association and an associate member of the American Dietetic Association.

Military news

Edward L. White, son of Margaret and Edward White of Clearwater, has completed training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

White, a 1990 graduate of Clearwater High School, was in the ROTC program for four years.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeffrey S. Hilts, son of June and Kenneth Ott of Clearwater, has been selected as the senior sailor of the month for Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 4, Naval Air Station, Sigonella, Italy.

Hilts was cited for his outstanding performance of duty, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing.
