Richard Fromberg, a clay court specialist, was among six players named Friday to a preliminary Australian team for the Davis Cup final against the United States. The final will be played Nov. 30-Dec. 2 on a clay court at the Florida Suncoast Dome in St. Petersburg.
Fromberg is the highest ranked Australian singles player at 28th on the ATP Tour computer, and has won two clay court tournaments this year.
Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash also was named to the squad along with Wally Masur, Darren Cahill, John Fitzgerald and Mark Kratzmann.
Fitzgerald gets another chance after missing the semifinal against Argentina. He played in the first two rounds, against France and New Zealand, both on grass courts.
Jason Stoltenberg, Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde were dropped from the eight-man squad that prepared for Argentina.
Under Davis Cup regulations, captain Neale Fraser must announce a six-man team by Nov. 20.
Andre Agassi and Michael Chang will play singles for the United States, and Rick Leach and Jim Pugh will team in doubles.
