DEATHS ELSEWHERE

GUILLERMO GARCIA, 36, a Cuban chess grand master, was killed Friday in a car accident outside Havana, the domestic news agency AIN said. Mr. Garcia was Cuba's national champion in 1974, 1977 and 1983 and had won several titles in Latin America and Europe. MAJOR "MULE" HOLLEY, 66, a jazz bassist who performed with a long list of musical greats, died of a heart attack Thursday in Maplewood, N.J. His first professional performance was in 1946, and he went on to perform with Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, Ella Fitzgerald, the Kenny Burrell Trio, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Rose Murphy, Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. He also performed Mack the Knife on Frank Sinatra's 1986 L.A. Is My Lady album.
