Following Friday night's 14-7 overtime loss to Dixie Hollins, Boca Ciega High School football coach John Bolen wore a blank expression. Bolen couldn't quite believe his team lost a second consecutive district game _ in overtime.
On the opposite side of the field, Dixie Hollins coach Mark Wiszowaty danced and celebrated with his team.
Boca Ciega won the coin toss to start overtime, but Bolen deferred. In overtime, the Kansas tiebreaker, each offense receives the ball on the 10-yard line with four downs to score.
On the third play in overtime, Dixie Hollins tight end James Reddish caught the game-winning 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Frank Shreve. Reddish came up empty-handed on the same play on first down in overtime and twice on an ill-fated drive at the end of the first half.
No matter, Reddish caught the pass when it counted the most.
"I saw that Bogie wanted our district title and nobody can take that from us," said Reddish, whose team is 6-1, 3-1 in district play. Boca Ciega, which suffered its second consecutive loss, is 3-4, 1-2 in Class 4A, District 10.
Rebels coach Mark Wiszowaty tried to pass to the right side of the end zone.
"It was there," Wiszowaty said. "He was open every time. Bogie spanked us (on defense) and shut us down."
The Pirates lost four of five fumbles, two which hurt their cause:
On its only play in overtime, Boca Ciega sophomore quarterback Kojara Ransom rolled left and attempted an option pitch. But it was high and Dixie Hollins free safety Serrell Rollins recovered to end the game.
With 1:34 left in the second quarter, Ransom attempted a handoff, but was stripped by Rebels' nose tackle Mike Sero. The Pirates offense wathced while Sero raced 38 yards for the tying touchdown.
Bolen said Ransom had the option to run the ball, but Bolen thought the pitch was there.
"We wanted him to pitch it," Bolen said. "It was a tough loss on the kids because they played hard. I'm proud of them."
Both teams squandered opportunities to score. Dixie Hollins committed two turnovers and Boca Ciega placekicker Sean Liss missed two field goal attempts nd had one punt and field goal attempt blocked.
Along with a fumble recovery, Rollins rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries.
Boca Ciega's Travis Yerby rushed for a game-high 114 yards on nine carries. On the Pirates' first offensive possession, Yerby rambled 33 yards for his team's only touchdown.
