Fullback Jim Schimpf scored two touchdowns as East Lake buried Land O'Lakes 31-7 Friday night in a Class 4A, District 8 football game. The Eagles improved to 2-1 in the district and 3-4 overall. The Gators fell to 1-4, 1-6.
After the Gators fumbled the opening kickoff, East Lake's 25-yard drive was capped by Schimpf's 2-yard plunge. That set the tone for the rest of the game.
"We came ready to play tonight," East Lake coach Rich Jenkins said. "We showed ourselves and everyone how we are capable of playing."
East Lake rolled up 214 yards on the ground with quarterback R.J. Slutz completing his first six passes to open up a decisive lead for East Lake.
Schimpf's second touchdown in the first minute of the second quarter gave the Eagles a 14-0 lead. East Lake then struck again behind Slutz.
Slutz scooted around the left end, avoided two tacklers and tossed a 21-yard strike to wide receiver Jeff Van Dusen, who was standing alone in the corner of the end zone. Slutz' touchdown pass gave East Lake a commanding 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
