No. 8 Miami (4-2) is coached by Dennis Erickson (15-3, second year); Texas Tech (2-5) is coached by Spike Dykes (22-19-1, fourth year).Last game: Miami lost to Notre Dame 29-20; Texas Tech lost to Rice 42-21.
Game plan: The Hurricanes, who dropped from No. 2 in the country to the No. 8 spot this past week, will be looking to take out their frustrations after being eliminated from the national-title race by the Irish last week. And they may have found the right team for that task. Texas Tech may be forced to start an inexperienced freshman, Robert Hall, at quarterback. The Red Raiders' defense has yielded over 33 points per game. Miami probably will attack with runners Stephen McGuire (450 yards) and Leonard Conley (340 yards) because Tech is giving up 221 yards per game. The Red Raiders are giving up almost an equal amount in the air so quarterback Craig Erickson (1,838 yards and nine touchdowns) may throw often. The Red Raiders' attack is keyed by tailback Anthony Lynn (797 total yards).
Notes: Miami has won 49 straight games against unranked teams. The Red Raiders made their only trip to the Cotton Bowl, which extends an automatic bid to the Southwest Conference champ, in 1939. They've made only two bowl trips in the last 14 years. Texas Tech starting quarterback Jamie Gill is trying to come back from a dislocated jaw, which he suffered last week.
