Senior running back Rob Nelson rushed for 106 yards, lifting Shorecrest over Clearwater Central Catholic 13-6 Friday night. Nelson gave the Chargers (5-2) a 7-0 lead on an 8-yard run with 11:53 to go in the first half.
The Marauders (0-7) recovered a Dean Harkey fumble on a punt return to set up their only score of the game. Senior running back Scott Sanders culminated the five-play, 20-yard drive with a 5-yard burst to pull Clearwater Central Catholic within one with 7:50 left in the second quarter. Shorecrest blocked the extra point and maintained the slim lead into the fourth quarter.
Field position played a key role in the second half as the Marauders found themselves backed up inside their own 20 four times. "We had no game plan for operating out of our own end zone," said head coach Bing Crosby.
Both defenses were unyielding, but Shorecrest gradually wore down the Marauders in the second half with its ball-controlled offense.
With junior Tony Sciarrino punting just out of his own end zone, Shorecrest got the ball at the Marauder 45-yard line. With 7 minutes to go, Dan Lynn capped an 11-play drive with a 5-yard run which opened a seven-point lead and assured them the victory.
