Gale-force winds battered the mid-Atlantic Coast on Friday, toppling part of a bridge linking the North Carolina mainland with Hatteras Island and leaving thousands of people without power. No injuries were reported. The storm also struck the Virginia coast. The National Weather Service reported winds gusting to 92 mph along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnnel. The storm was off the Delaware Coast by early afternoon and headed northward. Elsewhere, low temperature records were broken or tied in Fort Lauderdale, 55 degrees; Grand Rapids, Mich., 23 degrees; Mobile, Ala., 37 degrees; and Ozark, Ark., 29 degrees. Jamestown, N.D., and Rapid City, S.D., each had record highs of 80 degrees.
