Junior quarterback Kevin Dawson passed for two touchdowns Friday night to lead Tampa Catholic to a 20-6 victory over Lecanto in a Class 3A, District 4 football game. Willie Queen caught one of Dawson's scoring strikes for 70 yards in the second period, and wide receiver Andrew Mathis had a 37-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter for Tampa Catholic (6-1 in the district, 7-1 overall).
Lecanto's touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 42-yard option pass from Mark McTarsney to C.J. Natteal. The extra point attempt was no good.
The Panthers (1-6, 1-6) missed a good scoring opportunity on their first possession after Barclay Shoemaker recovered a fumble at the Panther 12-yard line.
Lecanto advanced to its own 33, but appeared to surrender the ball when Brian Bova punted on 4th-and-one. Then a defensive holding call against the Crusaders gave Lecanto a first down at the 43.
Following a 1-yard loss, McTarsney broke a 37-yard run to Tampa Catholic's 21-yard line. Lecanto fumbled twice, but managed to keep the ball and reached the 18-yard line.
However, a 35-yard field goal attempt by Bova sailed wide left with 3:03 to go in the first period.
Queen added a 2-yard touchdown run in the second period for the Crusaders. It capped a 66-yard, nine-play drive.
