Contractor Louis "Butch" Stramaglia has been found guilty of overdredging a canal so he wouldn't have to pay to truck in the dirt he needed to build the Sawgrass Expressway. A Broward County jury found Stramaglia guilty of one count of unlawful dredging, a third-degree felony.
"This case is about money, and it's about nothing else," prosecutor Keith Schafer told the jury. "Louis Stramaglia said, "I'm going to laugh all the way to the bank.' And that's exactly what he did."
Stramaglia, 44, convicted in March of stealing $1.7-million from subcontractors on the Sawgrass project, is already serving an 80-year prison sentence.
The conviction on Thursday could add 10 years to his prison term.
