MAGIC ROSTER

The Orlando Magic, 18-64 in its inaugural year, enters its second season, moving from the Eastern Conference to the Western. Times' NBA writer John Harris takes a look at the team and what to expect this season. The Magic must reduce its roster to 12 before the season starts Friday. Here are the 13 players fighting for spots:MARK ACRES Reserve center, power forward

Height: 6-11 Weight: 225

Age: 27 Years in NBA: 4

College: Oral Roberts

Personal: San Antonio center David Robinson said Acres and Minnesota's Tod Murphy were best defensive players to face him last year.

Expectation: Journeyman center, another big body coming off the bench.

NICK ANDERSON Starts at shooting guard

Height: 6-4 Weight: 205

Age: 22 Years in NBA: 2

College: Illinois

Personal: Anderson's 11.5 point-per-game scoring average was the highest for a rookie drafted 11th overall since 1980.

Expectation: Too strong for off-guards to handle, Anderson is another option for the Magic's weak low-post offense.

MICHAEL ANSLEY Reserve power forward

Height: 6-7 Weight: 225

Age: 23 Years in NBA: 2

College: Alabama

Personal: Averaged 8.7 points and five rebounds last season _ third among 1989 second-round draft picks.

Expectation: When Ansley comes in the game, the Magic's hustle-meter rises considerably.

TERRY CATLEDGE Starts at power forward

Height: 6-8 Weight: 230

Age: 27 Years in NBA: 6

College: South Alabama

Personal: Scored a franchise-record 49 points against Golden State last season.

Expectation: Orlando's top inside scoring threat.

SIDNEY GREEN First center off bench

Height: 6-9 Weight: 220

Age: 29 Years in NBA: 8

College: Nevada-Las Vegas

Personal: All-time leading rebounder and second-leading scorer in UNLV history, Green was fifth overall pick of Chicago Bulls in 1983 draft.

Expectation: The team's best rebounder and resident enforcer.

GREG KITE Starting center

Height: 6-11 Weight: 260

Age: 29 Years in NBA: 8

College: Brigham Young.

Personal: Member of two NBA world championship teams with Boston Celtics (1984 and 1986).

Expectation: The ex-Celtic was signed to rebound and lean on opposing centers.

JERRY REYNOLDS Starts at small forward

Height: 6-8 Weight: 206

Age: 27 Years in NBA: 6

College: Louisiana St.

Personal: Had best statistical season as a pro last year _ 12.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Expectation: A forward who moves like a guard and one of the team's best defenders.

DENNIS SCOTT Off bench at small forward

Height: 6-7{ Weight: 226

Age: 22 Years in NBA: Rookie

College: Georgia Tech

Personal: Named Player of the Year by The Sporting News, Scott recorded highest single-season point total in Atlantic Coast Conference history (970 points).

Expectation: For now, the best outside shooter on the team. For later, maybe the best player.

SCOTT SKILES First point guard off bench

Height: 6-1 Weight: 180

Age: 26 Years in NBA: 5

College: Michigan State

Personal: Holds Michigan State career records for points (2,145), assists (645), steals (173) and free-throw percentage (85.0).

Expectation: A quality backup point guard, Skiles is pushing starter Sam Vincent for playing time.

OTIS SMITH First shooting guard off bench

Height: 6-5 Weight: 210

Age: 26 Years in NBA: 5

College: Jacksonville

Personal: Averaged career-best 13.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 25.3 minutes last season.

Expectation: The team's best leaper and hardest worker, Smith has improved his perimeter game.

JEFF TURNER First power forward off bench

Height: 6-9 Weight: 240

Age: 28 Years in NBA: 5

College: Vanderbilt

Personal: Member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic gold-medal basketball team.

Expectation: He has lost 10 pounds, regained his quickness and is pushing Terry Catledge at power forward.

SAM VINCENT Starts at point guard

Height: 6-2 Weight: Age: 27 Years in NBA: 6

College: Michigan State

Personal: Combined with brother Jay to form highest scoring brother tandem in Big Ten history.

Expectation: The team's fastest player, Vincent is developing better court awareness and more consistent outside shooting.

MORLON WILEY Reserve point guard

Height: 6-4 Weight: 192

Age: 24 Years in NBA: 3

College: Long Beach State

Personal: Brother of former L.A. Clippers and San Antonio Spurs forward Michael Wiley.

Expectation: At his best when the Magic employs pressure defense.
