Drunken-driving check planned

HOLIDAY _ Pasco County sheriff's deputies will set up a drunken-driving checkpoint on County Road 595, their first in nearly three years. The checkpoint, at the 2100 block of County Road 595, will be from 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday. About 20 sheriff's officers, including members of the Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) will check drivers randomly for alcohol impairment, insurance and vehicle registration. Deputies also will check cars for faulty equipment. A Sheriff's Office dog unit will check for drugs, officials said. County Road 595 was selected for the checkpoint because almost half of the drunken-driving arrests made by the STEP unit were along that road, spokesman Jon Powers said. The road also lends itself logistically to hold the random stops, Powers said. The Sheriff's Office is running the random checks again because "it is something (we) like to do periodically," Powers said. The last check took place in April 1988.
