Eighth game for chess title adjourned

The eighth game of the world chess championship was adjourned Monday with titleholder Gary Kasparov sealing his 41st move against challenger Anatoly Karpov. Experts considered the game, which is scheduled to resume today, as giving Karpov chances to win his second game in succession.

The score in the 24-game match is currently tied at 3{ to 3{ with each player having one win and five draws.

The game opened Monday amid a war of nerves.

Both players looked calm and confident as they readied for battle on the stage of the Hudson Theater at the Hotel Macklowe.

Titleholder Kasparov showed that his seventh-game loss had not cowed him. He used an aggressive opening, advancing his king's pawn two squares.

Play developed along the lines of the classical Closed Ruy Lopez, one of the oldest and most complex opening systems in the game.

Karpov repeated the defensive system that led to a fluctuating battle in their sixth-round duel.

Kasparov changed his tactics on move 12 but did not succeed in surprising his opponent.

Karpov continued to play quickly and confidently and landed the first completely original idea, with a bold central advance on his 14th turn. Experts agreed that Karpov and his team must have extensively prepared the counterstroke before the game.

The challenger's ploy paid immediate dividends when Kasparov used nearly three quarters of an hour to formulate his response.

Here are the moves of Monday's contest:
