A 66-year-old Tampa man whose pickup truck backed into a Pasco County sheriff's cruiser has been charged with driving under the influence, according to reports of the Florida Highway Patrol and the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's reports gave this account:

Larry Doyal Norred was pulled over about 10:50 p.m. Saturday near U.S. 41 and Hale Road.

Pasco County sheriff's Deputy George Turnvall parked behind Norred, got out of the cruiser and began to walk toward the truck.

That is when Norred failed to shift the pickup into park, he said later.

As Norred got out, the truck slipped into reverse and slammed into the front of the deputy's 1988 Dodge Diplomat, causing about $800 damage.

Norred said by telephone from his home Sunday that he remembered thinking, ""... Why couldn't I have backed into anybody but a sheriff's car?'

"I was driving my son's car, and you have to really shove it kind of hard to get it into park," Norred said.

The rear bumper of the green 1978 Ford pickup was bent. There were no injuries reported.

The Florida Highway Patrol later arrested Norred of 4215 N. Coolidge Ave. in Tampa and charged him with drunken driving.

He was released from the West Pasco Detention Center on Sunday morning after posting a $500 bail.

The reports did not say why Turnvall had stopped Norred.
