Son on trial in mother's slaying

Jury selection started Monday in the trial of James R. Swinney, accused of strangling his mother in March. Carolyn Swinney, a junior high school teacher, was found dead in her South Tampa apartment complex. Police said her 34-year-old son made incriminating statements during questioning by detectives. Swinney, who may face the death penalty if convicted, apparently refused a plea offer from prosecutors.Correction

Hillsborough County has not yet awarded a $60,000 contract to provide psychological counseling for its employees pending an investigation into the process by which competitors were judged. A headline in Sunday's Times said otherwise.
