The Springstead High boys swim team's quest for a perfect regular season comes to a conclusion today, when the Eagles face Tarpon Springs-East Lake High at the Hernando County Family YMCA. The meet, which includes boys and girls, starts at 5 p.m.
Springstead's boys have compiled an 11-0 dual-meet record, including two victories over rival Gulf High.
The Eagles are led by junior Joe Vella, a transfer from Gulf who was named the boys swimmer of the year on the North Suncoast following his senior season.
Vella's specialty is butterfly, though he also has swum various distances of freestyle, breaststroke and the individual medley in addition to anchoring the Eagles' relays.
A trio of seniors, two juniors and one sophomore are also making important contributions for coach Rich Dofka's Springstead club.
Captain Steve Renner (distance freestyle) and classmates Jeff Venegoni (breaststroke and freestyle) and Jim Chez (freestyle relay) have provided senior leadership.
Juniors Chris Tuskes (sprint freestyle) and Sal Disanti (butterfly and individual medley) have also helped the Eagles pile up points, as has sophomore Rene Vasquez (freestyle, relays).
