The top-seeded Berkeley Prep Buccaneers cruised to victory over Seminole Presbyterian 15-11, 15-4 in the Class A, District 9 volleyball tournament Tuesday night. In earlier matches, second-seeded Tampa Prep (26-9) routed Lakeland Christian 15-4, 15-1 to advance to the semifinals tonight at 6 p.m. The Terrapins will face Bayshore Christian (14-9), which beat Tampa Baptist 15-8, 15-7.
Temple Heights defeated River Hills Christian 15-13, 15-6 to make its way into the other semifinal match against Berkeley Prep tonight at 8.
The defending state champion Buccaneers (28-5) used only one starter, sophomore Eileen Murfee, to defeat the Lady Lancers (10-11) and advance to the semifinals.
"It was a chance to get some young people in the match," Berkeley Prep coach Randy Dagostino said. "Even some kids we brought up from the junior varsity team got to play. It was a fun match."
Trailing 13-6 in the first game, Seminole Presbyterian rallied to shorten the margin to 13-11 with the help of two service aces from Sabra Bartlett. But the host Buccaneers closed out the game at 15-11 on a block by Murfee.
Berkeley Prep jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game after Fiona Bolton served a pair of aces and Claudette Otero followed with three more.
Amy Laurence and Cameron Ross of Berkeley Prep added a pair of kills later in the game to widen the gap to 14-4 before Murfee ended the match on a dink.
