Ford Cougars, Thunderbirds

Ford Motor Co. said Monday it is recalling 127,000 1987 Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar cars with 3.8-liter V-6 engines because of excess exhaust emissions. Testing by the Environmental Protection Agency and Ford indicated that the cars produced unacceptable levels of carbon monoxide at high altitudes and hydrocarbon levels at low altitudes, the company said. Owners are being notified by mail to bring the affected cars to dealers, who will install a vacuum retard valve and change ignition timing to correct the problem at no cost. Ford said vehicles built for sale in California and Canada were not affected.
