Police are investigating the sexual assault of a 27-year-old woman at an apartment complex near Starkey Road and East Bay Drive early Monday. The incident occurred between 2:30 and 2:45 a.m., when someone entered through a window at the woman's apartment where she was asleep on the couch, Largo police spokesman Dennis Crandall said. The man covered the woman's head and attacked her, Crandall said. The man, who did not show a weapon, ran from the apartment about an hour later, Crandall said.County considers pawn rule
Pinellas County commissioners will consider an ordinance that requires pawnbrokers to take a thumbprint of each customer who pawns property. The measure was suggested by Sheriff Everett Rice, who believes the ordinance will strengthen the county's efforts against theft. Rice told commissioners at a work session Tuesday that officials have prosecuted 57 men and women on stolen property charges as a result of identifications obtained from fingerprints. "Without the thumbprint, prosecution is difficult at best, because the owner can't remember the identity," Rice said.
