The Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) has closed a rest stop on Interstate 4 that had become notorious for lewd and lascivious activity. The DOT asked the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) last month for permission to dismantle the rest stop, which had no facilities. The FHA responded to the request Oct. 9, and state workers took down the signs leading to the rest stop last week, said Lee Royal, a spokeswoman for the DOT in Tampa. Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said they made more than 50 misdemeanor arrests at the unlighted rest stop this summer on charges of indecent exposure, lewd and lascivious behavior and other minor offenses. The DOT expects to finish closing the rest stop by the end of this week, Royal said.
