Firefighters battled a three-alarm trash fire at the McKay Bay garbage incinerator site Monday night. The fire started about 7:15 p.m. in piles of trash stored in a four-story, 30,000-square-foot garbage transfer station near the incinerator at 34th and Clark streets, said Tampa Fire Department Division Chief Matt Ballaban.
About 45 firefighters worked for more than three hours to extinguish the blaze, which was buried deep in the piles of trash, he said.
Ballaban said some firefighters might remain at the site all night to make sure the fire does not reignite. Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire, but it is possible the fire had been smoldering for hours before firefighters were called to the scene, Ballaban said. No one was injured.
