Attorneys for Washington Redskins receiver Ricky Sanders negotiated with team representatives Tuesday to schedule an aggravated assault trial against Sanders before the season ends. State District Judge Donald Shipley on Tuesday ordered prosecutors and defense attorneys to determine by today a date for Sanders' trial.
Prosecutors contend Sanders ran over a valet parking attendant and failed to stop and help him after an argument at a topless nightclub parking lot last May.
Defense attorney Wendell Odom Jr. said Shipley wants the trial done before the end of football season.
"Mr. Sanders doesn't want to have this bearing on his mind as he heads for the Super Bowl," Shipley said from the bench Tuesday.
Odom, who had sought a delay until after the season ends, spoke with Redskins attorneys in Washington to find a time when Sanders can be freed from team obligations.
