Party tarts can be sweet and smart

Whether you shape it to be a tart, a quiche, a pizza or a pie, a crust is a wondrous thing. For hundreds of years cooks have been filling crusts with meat, fish, poultry, game, cheese, vegetables and fruit and topping them with cream (soured or whipped), spices (zesty or delicate) and condiments of all shapes and flavors. The possibilities are endless.

In keeping with this tradition and using a little imagination, you can give a party that will fit the criteria we all seek: delicious, attractive and mostly prepared in advance.

Offer your guests pizza or quiche-style savory appetizer tarts to go with drinks and mingling, and finish the evening with sweet pies or tarts for dessert.

The party can be as easy or as complicated as you like. It can range from ordering pizzas and finishing with a "store-bought" pie, or buying crusts and filling them. Put out individual crusts or bread rounds and let guests choose from an array of prepared toppings to make their own special tart. You can make the sweets and buy the savories or make the savories and buy the sweets. Or you can make absolutely everything from scratch. The choice is yours.
