Pinellas Park's game at Riverview stays at 8

The football game between Pinellas Park and Sarasota Riverview will be played Friday night at 8 at Riverview's Ram Bowl, Riverview athletic director and coach John Sprague said Wednesday. Riverview officials considered moving the game to 1 p.m. after Sarasota County officials recommended that some games be played Saturday because of the encephalitis outbreak in Florida. Last week's Riverview-Clearwater game was played Saturday morning, but SAT tests scheduled for this Saturday would have conflicted with the Pinellas Park game.

"They had to clear it with their superintendent of schools and the health commission," said Paul McLaughlin, Pinellas County's assistant director of centralized athletics. "That's what took so long."

Northside Christian's game with Lake Highland Prep (in Orlando) has been moved to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

ST. PETERSBURG _ Gibbs High School's volleyball team has won the St. Petersburg championship for the second consecutive season.

The Gladiators, who compete in the Pinellas County Athletic Conference, went 5-0 against St. Petersburg public schools during an 18-7 regular season. They defeated Dixie Hollins, Boca Ciega, St. Petersburg, Northeast and Lakewood, clinching the city title with the victory over the Spartans.

"Although it doesn't get lots of recognition, we're very proud of that accomplishment," Gibbs coach Randle Bose said of the championship.
