Voters will add their voices Tuesday to the argument over whether Belleair Bluffs should share in the expense of a new community center. A referendum asks voters whether the city should use general funds and money raised by the county's 1-cent sales tax to buy property and help a private organization build a community center.
"The goal of the city was to get an approach from the citizens as to what they want," Mayor Donald Ahmann said. "Do they, indeed, want us to move into this direction, knowing that it will cost some money, or not?"
Belleair Bluffs Community Center Inc., a private organization of business people and community groups, began fund-raising efforts for land and a community center about year ago.
In June, members asked the city to help pay for it. While most city officials say the city should buy more land, they were not committed to building a community center unless residents wanted it.
If the measure passes, city officials would not be bound to do anything, Ahmann said. But they at least would have an idea of what to do.
"This will resolve the question of "Is the city for or against this?' " he said.
