Officials at the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park announced Thursday that they have named the baby manatee born Oct. 19 Betsy, after manatee handler Betsy Dearth. Dearth cares for the park's 10 manatees and presents educational programs about the animals to park visitors. Betsy the manatee, which has bonded well with her mother Amanda, is the fifth manatee to be born at the park. Three of the other four died. Amanda and Betsy remain in an isolation area.
