Player of the month: New York Rangers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck, who had a 6-1-0 record, was named Thursday the NHL Pro Set Player of the Month for October. Vanbiesbrouck, who backstopped the Rangers to the best record in the league in October with a .926 save percentage and 2.29 goals-against average, beat out a number of outstanding performers in the voting, including Calgary's Al MacInnis, who led all defensemen in scoring with 25 points (8-17-25) and St. Louis' Brett Hull, the top goal scorer with 15.

Whalers: Hartford sent left wing Mikael Andersson to the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League on Thursday.

Sabres: Buffalo recalled defenseman Brad Miller and right wing Rob Ray from its Rochester Americans farm team Thursday.
