School cleaning contract may not be cheap

Published Oct. 13, 2005

Editor: It will be interesting to see how much we save by hiring an outside cleaner (ServiceMaster for Hernando County schools). It is not only supplies, it is also people being laid off. Let's remember to add into the so-called savings the unemployment payments and probably putting the help on welfare, including the whole family.

Too bad we can't vote every year.

All-night stores

could be made safer

Editor: I don't know if the county has ruled that at least two people have to work in a convenience store during the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift. I know that there was much discussion about it. If it was passed, it has not been enforced.

I think that I have a better solution. Why can't convenience stores install a sliding drawer, larger and deeper than drive-through bank drawers, to accommodate a gallon of milk and a six-pack of beer, or whatever. That way the doors to the store could be locked during those hours, and I'm sure that the one person working would gladly collect the items that the customer wants and pass it through the drawer.

This way there need be only one person working and he or she would be safer. It would prevent robberies during the night.
