Sharks trade Churla to North Stars for Kisio

The San Jose Sharks acquired center Kelly Kisio from the Minnesota North Stars on Monday in exchange for Shane Churla in a swap of two players drafted by the respective teams last week. Kisio, 31, spent the last five seasons with the New York Rangers, four as the team's captain, before being selected by the North Stars in an expansion draft last Thursday. Kisio was hampered by injuries last season and managed just 15 goals and 20 assists in 51 games after seven consecutive 20-goal seasons.

"Kelly Kisio provides us with another player having valuable NHL experience," San Jose general manager Jack Ferreira said. "He is a proven point scorer and is effective on the power play and penalty killing units.

"He is a great leader, as witnessed by his role as captain for the Rangers."

Churla, 26, was acquired by the Sharks in a dispersal draft on Thursday in which 24 Minnesota players became members of the San Jose organization. He gained a reputation as an enforcer in 2{ seasons with the North Stars.

Churla totaled two goals and two assists with 284 penalty minutes in the 1990-91 season, then added two goals, one assist and 90 penalty minutes over 22 playoff games. In parts of five NHL seasons, Churla accumulated 879 penalty minutes while tallying six goals and 11 assists.

Devils, Nordiques trade defensive prospects

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. _ The New Jersey Devils acquired Brent Severyn from the Quebec Nordiques for Dave Marcinyshyn in an exchange of defensive prospects Monday.

During the 1990-91 season, Severyn, 25, appeared in 50 games for the Halifax Citadels of the American Hockey League and had 7 goals and 26 assists.

He played in 35 games with Quebec of the NHL during the 1989-90 season and had two assists.

Marcinyshyn, 24, began the 1990-1991 season with New Jersey of the NHL and appeared in nine games. He had one assist before being assigned to the AHL Utica Devils.
