A woman was shot and killed and her husband seriously injured Tuesday in what police think is a murder and attempted suicide. Betty Roy, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, which was her house at 1481 Carolyn Lane in Clearwater. She had been shot in the head with a shotgun, said Marianne Pasha, spokeswoman for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department.
Her husband Richard Roy, 55, who suffered what police said apparently were self-inflicted wounds, was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
Joe Aznar, who lives nearby and knows the family, said he had just gotten out of the shower when his wife told him, "You've got to get out. The police are here."
Aznar, his wife and baby were ushered out of the house. As he left, he saw police approaching the house next door. "It was like right out of TV," he said.
Earlier in the day, Richard Roy had come by the house, suggesting that they go out later to play a game of pool, Aznar said.
He said Roy had been upset recently because he was in divorce proceedings with his wife.
"He was just very depressed," Aznar said.
Court records indicate that Betty Roy had filed a domestic violence complaint against her husband in March.
She also filed for divorce in March, court records show. In April, Richard Roy filed a motion asking the court to compel them to have marriage counseling. A hearing in the case was scheduled for later this month.
Neighbors said the Roys have a son and a daughter.
