An argument over a can of soda in an adult education class led to an exchange of gunfire between a student and a teacher's aide that sent both to the hospital with bullet wounds. Student John "Pee Wee" Harris and Kevin McCreary, 25, swapped gunshots in the class, held in a housing complex.
The violence broke out after McCreary, who is also a student but works as an aide, confiscated Harris' soft drink.
Harris, who police said is either 16 or 17, marched out of the classroom, vowing to return with a gun, authorities said. McCreary then left and returned shortly with a gun of his own.
Harris entered through a rear window and about 12 other students ran out a back door. Harris then confronted McCreary, police said.
Students reported hearing two shots, but it was unclear who fired first. Charges had not yet been filed in the Monday night shooting, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
Harris was in serious condition at Halifax Medical Center. McCreary was treated for a gunshot wound and discharged from the hospital Monday.
