BYU takes lead in NCAA tourney

Dean Wilson and Jeff Kraemer of Brigham Young University each shot a 1-under-par 71 to share the first-round lead Wednesday at the NCAA men's golf championships. Wilson, a junior from Kaaneohe, Hawaii, and Kraemer, a junior from Canada, helped their team to the opening-round lead with a five-man score of 295 on the Poppy Hills Golf Course.

The two BYU players share the lead with Northwestern's Bill McGowan, a senior from Augusta, Ga., and Georgia Southern's Bo Fennell, a senior from Statesboro, Ga. Ten players are tied for fifth at even-par 72 on the 6,865-yard layout.

Two-time defending champion Phil Mickelson of Arizona State tied for 21st with a 74. Mickelson is seeking to join Ben Crenshaw, who played for Texas, as three-time NCAA titlists.

In the team competition, BYU, with a seven-over-par 295, holds a one-shot lead over Northwestern at 296. Wake Forest and North Carolina are tied for third at 298. Southern California is fifth in the 30-team field with a 299. The University of Florida is tied for sixth with Oklahoma State at 300. Arizona State, the 1990 team champion, had a 309 total and is tied for 19th place.

The 72-hole tournament runs through Saturday, with 18 holes scheduled each of the next three days.

Castellucci ousts 2 former

champs in women's meet

PINEHURST, N.C. _ Maria Castellucci, a 19-year-old who won three amateur tournaments in 1990, beat two former champions Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the Women's North and South golf tournament.

Castellucci beat former champion Anne Sander on the 20th hole in their morning round and completed her day of upsets with a 1-up victory over Carol Semple Thompson, the qualifying medalist and two-time winner.

Kelly Robbins also beat a former champion, taking a 2-up victory over Leslie Shannon.

Robin Weiss, a member of the 1990 Curtis Cup team, advanced to the semifinals with a 5 and 4 victory over Patricia Cornett in the morning at the par-73, 6,065 Pinehurst Country Club No. 2 course.

Weiss finished the day by beating Tonya Gill 2 up.

The semifinals will be played Thursday with the finals on Friday.
