Tampa boy, 5, killed in hit-run accident

A 5-year-old boy was killed Saturday night when he ran into traffic on N 40th Street and was struck by two cars, one of which ran over his head and drove away, Tampa police said. Dominique Collins was fishing for catfish with his cousins on the southside of the Hillsborough River when he ran across the road to play with his older brother, the boy's family said.

Dominique was hit by a northbound Toyota Tercel just north of Pocahontas Street, which knocked him backward into the southbound lane of N 40th, police said.

A second car, traveling south, ran over the boy's head, killing him instantly, police said.

Inside an apartment at the River Grove complex on the east side of 40th Street, Dominique's grandfather, Oliver Jenkins Jr., sat crying in his living room.

"I loved that boy," he said as his other grandchildren sat on the couch next to him. "I love all of them."

Dominique and his older brother, Nathaniel Jr., had come to stay with his grandfather for the weekend, as they had for the past couple of months.

He spent the evening with three of his first cousins fishing along the riverbank at the south end of the 40th Street bridge.

About 8:40 p.m. he wanted to play a game with his older brother and ran across the street, his family said.

"We were going to play Simpsons," said Nathaniel Collins, referring to a game based on the TV show.

Police have not released a description of the second car that drove away.

Gordon Commee, the leasing agent for the River Grove Apartments, said he has spoken before the City Council about the traffic that speeds by the apartments.

"This boy did not have to die," Commee said.

Commee said he has asked the council to put up traffic signs urging drivers to reduce speed at the south end of the bridge.

"There are too many close calls," he said.
