The fifth annual Homosassa River Raft Race drew a crowd of several thousand observers to watch more than a dozen crews try to race various homemade designs of non-motorized vessels along a half-mile course from K.C. Crump restaurant to marker No. 5 and back to the restaurant. This year's winner was from K.C. Crump and used a tarp as a spinnaker for the return leg. All the rafts made it around the complete course without sinking, although Highlife Christian Center's crew found itself bailing rapidly against a leak. The raft made it across the finish line with only an inch of hull above water. It immediately foundered when its four-man crew abandoned the effort. All proceeds from the race entry fees went to the Citrus County chapter of the American Cancer Society.
