Winter Garden duo win PBA regional title

Winter Garden's Jason Couch and Doug Becker defeated St. Petersburg's Scott Price and Tampa's Darin Hays to win the PBA Southern Regional Doubles bowling title Sunday at Largo Lanes. Couch rolled a 251 game, Becker a 181 to beat Price-Hays 432-368 in an all-left-hander final to collect $5,000. Price, in only his second regional event, and Hays split $2,600. Price and Hays were Sunday's high qualifiers after 16 games.

Three-time champions Tom Crites of Tampa and Larry Barwick of Wauchula finished third. Chattanooga's Paul Williams and Gary Hancock, high qualifiers after Saturday's first qualifying round, finished fourth.

Couch and Becker, second-high qualifiers Sunday, defeated Crites and Barwick 472-399 despite Crites' third straight 250-plus game. In the first finals match, Crites-Barwick beat Williams-Hancock 445-385, with Crites rolling a 255 game. Crites is a five-time PBA tour winner.

Couch, a former St. Petersburg resident, rolled a 267 game with eight strikes in a row against Crites-Barwick.

Clearwater's James Campbell and Atlanta's Mark Honea finished 12th. Scott Monteleone of New Orleans, Jack Runkle of Clearwater, and Hays each rolled 300 games during qualifying.

There were 114 bowlers in the field.
