A 2-year-old boy was killed Monday when he walked in front of a city garbage truck on a street in Belmont Heights, Tampa police said. Darren Wilson Jr. was playing with two children in the front yard of his grandmother's house at 3707 McBerry St. when the truck, driven by Joseph Elmore of Tampa, drove up at about 4 p.m., police said.
Tampa police Sgt. W. J. Sluga gave this account of what happened:
Elmore got out of the truck and warned a young girl playing nearby to stay out of the road. He put a load of garbage in the back of the truck and got back in the driver's seat. In the meantime, Wilson wandered out in front of the truck. Elmore did not see the boy and when the truck moved, it struck Wilson.
Sluga said Elmore did not realize he had hit the child until his next stop a few houses away.
The incident was ruled accidental and Elmore, who has worked as a garbage truck driver for 8 months, will not be charged, Sluga said.
