To be eligible, programs must have a goal of improving waste handling or environmental stewardship, be ongoing or emphasize the need for a sustaining effort, include activities that change attitudes about waste handling and prevent littering, and educate citizens about the waste issue.

Entries are being accepted in these categories: state organizations, civic organizations, youth groups, schools, local business/industry, national business/industry, communications, local government, state/federal agencies and military.

Recycling awards are open to individuals, non-profit organizations, government agencies and business/industry.

The deadline for national award entries is 5 p.m. Aug. 23. National award applications are available by writing to Keep America Beautiful, 9 W Broad St., Stamford, Conn. 06902, or by calling KAB at (203) 323-8987. The deadline for the Steel Recycling Award is 5 p.m. Aug. 19.

A panel of judges from government, industry, citizen groups and national organizations will select the winners, which will be notified by mail by Oct. 31.
