A's take Saint Leo pitcher

Former Saint Leo College pitcher Mike Evans was chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the 32nd round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft last week. Evans, 22, is the 29th player from Saint Leo to enter professional baseball. Evans was Saint Leo's top starter last season before suffering a broken finger on his pitching hand. He was 2-3 with a 2.76 earned run average in 58 innings. He struck out 38 and walked 18.

The 6-foot-4 Evans will report this week to the A's Medford, Ore., farm club of the Class A Northwest League.

Football: Former Ridgewood High linebacker Ken Lowenburg will accept a scholarship from Lees McRae College in North Carolina. Lees McRae will become an NCAA Division II member in 1993.

Lowenburg previously said he would sign a scholarship with Arizona Western Junior College, but changed his mind.
