Man accused in fiery attack booked into jail

HILLSBOROUGHTAMPA _ Robert Lee Bennett, charged with attacking a Tampa man and setting him on fire on the Courtney Campbell Parkway in February, was booked into the county jail Wednesday, officials said. Bennett was accused of first-degree attempted murder and arson June 5 in Atlanta, where detectives are investigating similar cases. Bennett, a former lawyer, visits the Tampa area frequently to visit his mother in Clearwater. County officials sought his arrest after Gary Clapp, 35, identified Bennett in a photograph as the man who attacked him, set his lower torso on fire and left him on the causeway.


Man drowns in swimming pool

ST. PETERSBURG _ A 37-year-old man drowned Wednesday in the swimming pool at his apartment complex, police said. An employee of Westwood Gardens Apartments, 2601 Tyrone Blvd., found Paul Davies at the bottom of the pool about 4 p.m., police Sgt. Debbie Prine said. Davies had been swimming alone, Prine said.
