McKinney takes 4th in national meet

Henry McKinney, a rising senior at Clearwater High School, finished fourth in the 800-meter run at the National Scholastic Outdoors Championships this past weekend in Van Nuys, Calif. McKinney ran a 1:53.55, off his personal best of 1:52.5.

"It was quite an experience going out there and running against the top guys in the nation," said McKinney.

"You look around and you don't see anybody you know. I was really nervous."

McKinney was a two time Times all-county selection and a two time 4A region 2 champion. He was second in the 800 meters at the 4A state meet this past spring.

Official change: Paul McLaughlin, the former assistant director of centralized athletics for Pinellas County, has been named as new director of field services for the Florida High School Activities Association, Charles Smith _ the FHSAA's departing field director _ confirmed Wednesday.

Smith, the FHSAA's field director for the past nine years, said he is being removed as part of an administration-wide personnel shuffle, implemented by Ronald Davis _ who in August is replacing Fred Rozelle as the effective head of the organization.

McLaughlin, 44, for the past 4{ years had been assistant to Bob Hosack, Pinellas' Director of Centralized Athletics. In January, due to budget cuts, he was uprooted from his job as Pinellas' assistant director of Centralized Athletics and was assigned to teach math at Largo High.

Before signing on with the county (in 1986), he served as activities director at Countryside High School (from 1978-86) and as an assistant football coach at two Pinellas high schools (from 1973-78).

Golf marathon: Ten golfers, playing in a golfing marathon from dawn until dusk, raised $5,000 Monday for the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Florida Suncoast Ministry that takes in Pinellas and west Pasco counties.

Three golfers completed 108 holes: David Greenwood, the assistant pro at East Lake Woodlands; David Humphreys, the FCA golf chairman; and Roy Heintz, the FCA staff area representative.

The event was held at East Lake Woodlands.
