Leto's Murphy leads the attack

Michele Murphy has led the offense for the 15-1 Leto girl's soccer team all season.

Entering the Class 4A, District 6 tournament last week, she had scored 35 goals, four short of her total as a junior forward last season.

She scored half her team's goals Wednesday night when the Falcons defeated Gaither 8-3 and added two more in Leto's 6-0 win over King in the championship finals.

Her six goals were a major factor in the Falcons' District 6 championship. Her total for the year is 41, enough to continue as the county's leading scorer, and it is just one short of a school record set by center-forward Cindy Lockard in the 1985-86 season.

Murphy's effort was the Hillsborough County high school athletic Performance of the Week.

"Michele's performance in the two district games took a lot of courage, because she was sick in bed with the flu up until the first match," said Leto head coach John Brannan. "She said she just didn't want to let the team down so I let her play. She turned in two very gutsy games under the circumstances."

Murphy played left wing in both her sophomore and junior years with the Falcons, but Brannan said he moved her to center forward this season to get the most from her quickness.

"She has awesome speed with acceleration that just continues to build," said Brannan. "I was pulling for her to set a new record in the district matches, but that didn't happen. Our regional match with Bloomingdale will be a tough one. We had a 4-2 win against them in the conference season, but they are always tough. Maybe Michele will set the new record then.

"She probably would have already scored more, but during the season I always pull the girls when they score three goals or put them on defense when we are far ahead in a match."

Boys basketball: Gaither senior guard Joe Jackson scored a career high 34 points in pacing the Cowboys offense in an 87-73 victory over Bloomingdale Friday night.

Teammates Jose Ramos and T.J. Lewis added 21 and 20 points respectively. Terrance Freeman only contributed 11 points to the win, but nine of them came from three-pointers.

Chris Akers, Bloomingdale's state-leading scorer, added 84 points in three games last week to bring his season total to 581.

Shane Vogt scored 28 points in Chamberlain's 75-59 win over Plant City Saturday night. He also scored 16 in the Chiefs' 76-72 win over Robinson Wednesday.

His total against the Raiders included four three-point baskets.

Wrestling: Only five wrestlers completed the 1991-92 dual-match season last week with unbeaten and untied records earning recognition as the county's finest.

Defending state champion Dennis Kitko from Brandon finished 22-0 at 119 pounds.

Tampa Catholic's Travis Del Rosal finished 11-0 at 112 and Jefferson's Mondie Richardson was 15-0 at 130.

Chamberlain's Lon Passoff finished 19-0 at 145 pounds and East Bay's heavyweight Eric Rivera closed out at 20-0.

Girls soccer: Christie Reccord scored four goals in Bloomingdale's 10-0 win over Brandon in the district 5 title match last Friday. Teammate Heather Ott added three.
