New milk label lists "healthy baby' hot line


Gov. Lawton Chiles unveiled a new information label Monday that Florida milk producers have agreed to put on their cartons, listing 1-800-451-BABY, the state's "Healthy Baby Hotline." Sponsored by the state Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS), the hot line answers questions about prenatal care and refers pregnant women to health facilities in their communities. The cartons will be on store shelves throughout Florida through April 5.

John Hewitt dies in fire

TAMPA _ Dr. John Hewitt, a longtime Tampa dentist and civil rights worker, died Saturday in a fire at his home. He was 71. Fire officials had not determined the cause of the blaze Monday. Hewitt was widely known for treating anyone who sought his help, regardless of ability to pay, and for social activism. He was one of the first black people to sit on the county's Selective Service Board and was a founding director of the now-defunct Community Federal Savings & Loan.

TAMPA _ Sheriff's detectives were investigating a fatal shooting in Ruskin late Monday night. Sheriff's dispatchers received a call on a domestic dispute at 1114 24th St. SE just after 10:30 p.m., officials said. Three deputies were en route to the home when dispatchers received a call that a shooting had occurred, officials said. The deputies arrived to find a person lying dead in the middle of the road at 24th Street and 11th Avenue SE, officials said. Another person was found at the intersection holding a gun, authorities said. No further information was available late Monday night.


Motorcyclist killed

in crash at park

ST. PETERSBURG _ A 21-year-old man was killed Monday when he crashed his motorcycle into the back of a pickup at Fort De Soto Park, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Christopher M. Bauck, 21, of 937 Pinellas Bayway, No. 109, in Tierra Verde, was fatally injured when he rammed his 1986 Kawasaki into the truck at about 1:30 p.m, said Trooper Tyrone Crim. Crim said Bauck was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:48 p.m. He said Bauck was southbound on State Road 679 between the campground and the boat ramp when John Irvine, 78, of Ashland, Ky., slowed down in front of him. Bauck apparently was unable to slow down. No charges were filed against Irvine.
