Bloomingdale girls region champs

Bloomingdale won its third consecutive Class 4A, Region III girls soccer championship 6-3 over Leto on Tuesday.

Each year, the Bulls (14-3) have defeated Leto (14-2) in the regional.

Bloomingdale will play Seminole in the 4A-Section II game Friday. The Warhawks, a 1-0 winner Tuesday over Countryside, have beaten the Bulls in the sectionals in each of the last two years.

"This is nice. Now we just have to get through Friday," Bloomingdale coach Jo Garber said. "The team is playing extremely confident right now. They said earlier that if they beat Leto they would go all the way (to the state tournament) this year."

Behind 2-1 at halftime, Leto scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

Heather Ott headed a loose ball into the Falcons' goal, and Christy Reccord scored from close to give the lead back to Bloomingdale with 16:47 left.

Leto had an own goal with 5:10 left and Reccord ended the scoring in the 37th minute.

"We started out a little slowly tonight, and that's typical when we play Leto," Garber said. "But we've been working very hard on correcting our mistakes, and we've been playing consistent soccer the last two weeks."

Leto's Michele Murphy tied the school's single-season scoring record with a goal at 9:01 of the first half. Murphy, the county's leading scorer, has 42 goals, tying the record of Cindy Lockard (1985-86). Stacia Masters scored twice for Leto.
