Man accused of raping 5 Hillsborough women

A 31-year-old Mississippi man has been charged with raping five women in Hillsborough County in 1990, according to Hillsborough sheriff's officials.

The suspect, Eddie B. Woods, gave information about the crimes while he was being interviewed by New Orleans, La., authorities in connection with a series of rapes there, officials said.

Woods has been charged in Hillsborough County with one count of attempted murder, five counts of sexual battery and four counts of armed burglary. He is being held in New Orleans, officials said.

Hillsborough officials said Woods attacked five women between Jan. 28 and Oct. 20, 1990, in Gibsonton, Ruskin and Palm River.

He is accused of dragging a woman from a pay phone she was using and raping her behind a nearby convenience store Jan. 28, 1990. He choked her until she was unconscious and then covered her body with debris, officials said.

Woods also is accused of raping a woman at knifepoint in her Gibsonton home March 27, 1990, and attacking two women July 19, 1990. In both cases, he awakened the women in their homes in Ruskin. He tied one of the women by her hands and ankles and then raped her. The other woman was raped at knifepoint, officials said.

The last attack in Hillsborough happened Oct. 20, 1990, when he raped a woman after threatening her with a knife, officials said.

Woods is white, 5 feet 8, 185 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes and a moustache. Woods has a current address of 5958 Tishmingo St. in Walls, Miss., where his mother and stepfather live, officials said.

Woods has a common-law wife and a child 7{ months old, officials said.

Anyone with information about the crimes should call Sheriff's Detective Mark Corso at 247-8680 or 247-8201.
