UF raises $392-million in five years

The University of Florida (UF) has raised more money in a private fund-raising campaign than any public university in the United States except the University of California at Berkeley and Ohio State University. UF raised more than $392-million during the five-year capital funds drive, which ended officially Dec. 31. The original goal, reached in spring 1990, was $250-million, but fund-raisers kept going to meet additional needs. More than 100,000 donors made gifts or pledges, including $105.4-million from alumni, $84.6-million from corporations and $19.1-million from private foundations, a spokesman said.

Trust fund established for orphans

RUSKIN _ A trust fund has been established for three orphaned children whose mother was killed in July and whose grandmother was killed Monday in similar circumstances. Lisa Lopez, 9, her brother, David, 8, and infant sister, Candy, lost their mother July 15 when a jealous boyfriend shot her. Lisa saw the killing. The three children were in the custody of their grandmother, Maria Quintanilla, 42, when she was shot to death near their trailer home. All three children, who are in the care of a 27-year-old aunt, saw the latest shooting. Contributions may be sent to the Maria Quintanilla-Rendon Memorial Fund, Northside Bank of Tampa, 12233 Florida Ave. N, Tampa 33612. Hillsborough sheriff's deputies continued their search Wednesday for the alleged gunman, Juan Mendoza, 25, of Ruskin.
